    '94 Startup problem

    Hi all,

Engine is the EFI model version.

Had a weird thing happen yesterday. Boat was just summerized by a shop i use and they said everything went normal.

When i got the boat home i spent the day doing odds and ends to prep for this weekend. Once everything was finished, I decided to go ahead and hook up the hose-based water system and start up the boat in the drive-way to make sure all was well and know what to expect before putting it in the water.

Well, I put the key in, turned it to position 1, pushed the ignition switch and the gauges activated, pushed the blower switch and it could be heard. Tested the bilge pump and it worked. When i went to turn the key to the start position (i.e., crank the engine), all power was lost, blower went off and gauges went flat. Now, depressing the ignition switch with the key on produces nothing from the gauge cluster. The battery is new.

Any idea what could be causing such a condition? Any idea what to check to remedy this condition?

Edit/Update: I checked the 50 and 12.5 breakers and the 50 amp breaker seems to be sticking farther out than the 12.5, but neither of them can be depressed.

After i checked the breakers i turned the key on and pushed the ignition switch and got some power to the gauge cluster, the batter said ~10.5 and there is a buzzing noise in the engine bay ( i don't remember that previously). Turned the key to crank the engine resulted in complete loss of all power again and now i can't seem to get any power back to the gauge cluster again.

Well, problem solved. After searching around here, I was able to read enough about similar issues to know where to start and was able to identify a problem using the volt meter. Once that problem was corrected, it cranked like a champ in the drive way multiple times, so ready to hit the water tomorrow!

Hope everyone has a great Memorial Day weekend on the water!

Awesome! What turned out to be the problem?

It was actually pretty simple once i got the voltmeter out. The was some very minute corrosion at a connector within the ground line that wasn't really visible, but power dropped substantially after it. Once i cleaned that up, everything was back to normal.

Yep. So many problems are resolved with cleaning up a corroded ground. The corrosion prevents the power from flowing properly.

          Nice work!
