    steering problems...please help

I have a steering issue with my 89 Sport.

Its got the old, pretty basic steering system where the steering cable feeds into a housing attached to the wheel. Inside that housing there must be some kind of gear or somethng that has 'teeth' which grip the steering cable and push/pull it in/out as you turn the wheel.

From what I can tell, these 'teeth' have gotten worn down. Turning the wheel, eventually it will grip the cable enough to move the rudder, but sometimes it sticks and its certainly no where near what it should be. It jsut seems like these 'teeth' slip when you turn the wheel and they just don't grip the cable like they should. I've disconnected the steering cable and it looks good (some metal chips on there, which I assume have come off the worn down gear), plenty of grease, plus it was replaced brand-new last summer

Anyone ever seen this, or have any suggestions? I would assume that you could replace whatever is inside that steering housing that's gotten worn down, or possibly replace the whole unit. Eather way looks fiarly simple, its just accessing that area to do the work that will be difficult.

I've called my dealer and he seemed to know if the problem, and was going to look up the part for me; but he's been kind of slow getting back to me and I don't have any more time to wait. (won't mention who they are, b/c they're an otherwise outstanding dealer/shop, and I'm sure this has just gotten lost in the shuffle)

I've got a house full of people coming in this weekend for the holiday; so I'd like to get this fixed so we can ride instead of just puttering around with crappy steering.

thanks for whatever ideas or suggestions you've got.
