Heater removal?

I removed my heater for two reasons:

1. Never used it
2. Needed space for 2nd battery

My question is, should I plug the two ports from which the hoses came from or is running a short hose from one port hole to the other okay?

I'm asking this cause I currently have a short hose running from one port to the other and my temp gauge jumps from 160 to 210 and it never did that before (new impeller installed this yr).

I don't think it would be a problem running a short hose between the two, but I would probably just put the plugs back in. One less thing to worry about getting the water out of when winterizing or having it leak during the summer.
