Muffler explosion

Have a 94 Nautique that has been running great. After filling with gas and running for about 30 min, the engine died. Engine would turn over once then die on each try after that. On the fifth try, the riser on the muffler blew completely off.

Any ideas what may have caused this - and how costly the repair may be?

something got hot, burnt up a bit, fell down at that moment, blocked the airflow and caused too much backpresure, then boom. check all the exhaust hoses, they are probably crispy on the inside.

Wow, never heard of that happening before! Something is blocking something somewhere.
