GS20 Starboard Ballast Auto Filling?

Does anyone know why my starboard ballast would fill on its own? Its very bizarre. When we get back to the dock the ballast says its empty. I immediately lift the boat out of the water when we get in the boat slip so it doesn't sit in the water for extended periods of time. Then the next time we go out on the boat it will say the starboard ballast is 40% full. This seems to happen pretty much every time. Its as if the starboard ballast partially fills while the boat is out of the water on the lift.

This happen to mine as well . Your starboard ballast impeller is starting to fail and letting water in.

Example : You finish surfing and go back to dock thinking you have just drained all the water out. You tie up briefly at dock prior to putting boat in lift. Since you just drained your ballast prior to tie up you never think to check the ballast level minutes before you put your boat in the lift. When you come back to your boat in the lift in the future and splash it in the water again you notice your starboard ballast is 40% full. Bottom line your starboard ballast was filling up while your boat was tied up.
This drove me crazy until I figured out what was occurring.

Our 2017 GS20 did the same thing. After sitting the starboard tank would read about 40% full. I think it was just a glitch in the system, I don't actually think there was ballast in the tank. While running the blower I would "drain" the tank. Once it read zero we were good for the day. Again, I don't actually think there was any water in it.

It essentially happens every time I turn the boat completely off and then turn it back on. While riding the ballast will show that it’s completely empty, but if I enter the code, power down completely, and then power back up the starboard ballast will say 40%. I think it’s a glitch as well.

mine does the same, but I think it is the port side. not sure, I will pay more attention next time. it also doesn't do it all the time

How many hours did you have on your boat when the impeller failed? I only have 100 hours on my boat but probably only use the ballast system 10% of the time.

I put 150 hours on my boat last season( 1st season of use) and we filled and emptied bassist quite often . Towards the end of the summer I noticed the ballasts were starting to act a bit goofy by filling and draining on their own while the boat was tied up to my dock briefly ( 30 minutes to 2 hours) prior to me putting it up in my lift. When I came back the following weekends at times when I let the boat down out of the lift the center ballast would be say 30-40 filled even though I never initiated the fill cycle. Bottom line I would say after about 100 hours I started experiencing these problems. Now that the center ballast has been replaced it works fine. The removed ballast had many of the rubber blades broken on it.

I think you may have nailed the problem because it takes my starboard ballast 2x as long to empty as the port. The only thing that I don’t understand is how the tank can auto fill. There is a valve on the water pick up that closes when the pumps stop. I verified that this valve is working on my boat. Also I tried to empty the starboard ballast while on the my lift and no water was being pumped out.

I havent been able to change or inspect the starboard impeller because the oil filter has to be removed to get to the impeller housing screws.
