Ballast Fill While Underway?

Do you fill your ballast while underway? Any reason not to? I have always just filled up while stopped and getting ready, but have wondered if it affects anything to fill up, or empty, while cruising.

I fill while underway, and the pumps like the extra juice from the higher rpms.

Can the same be said for emptying the tanks while underway? I assume no problem doing that and that they empty as effectively as sitting still. correct?

Depends on if your inlets have scoops under the boats. If they do, then when you empty at 15mph etc your gonna put extra pressure on the pumps due to the force motion of the water. If underway filling the only issue you might have is extra air coming across the running surface.

When you guys say "Underway".....how fast are you talking? Fast idle....or up on plane or faster?? Underway for someone might mean just above idle. Just curious on the speed you are referring to. Thanks.

Good point. I was more referring to planed out type of underway.

No issues emptying while underway. If I remember correctly, the boats that had the scooped intakes all emptied over the side of the boat, not underneath.

I would assume if you go to fast then it can grab all that water . Maybe I’m wrong
