Engine overheating and bilge full of water.

After pulling my new to me 2002 SANTE out after the winter, the engine was overheating and the bilge filled with water. I got a tow back to the launch. The mechanic tells me the impeller was broken (why it was overheating) and after fixing that, I find out the heat exchanger is cracked (source of the water).

The impeller was old (so he tells me). This is the same place that did the winterization. Could the problem with the heat exchanger be from doing a ****ty job winterizing?

The mechanic is telling me that the heat exchanger for a PCM 5.8l is special and takes 12 days to get. I’m in Canada so that is pretty much the summer holiday shot.

Does anyone know a good parts source in Canada? I’ve been burning up the internet trying to find a heat exchanger.

    I assume you know about

    www.nautiqueparts.com

Planet Nautique members get 10% off with code PND.

Good luck. They've been great to work with. I hope you are back on the water soon.

Assuming when you say heat exchanger that you're talking about the unit that is used to extract heat for the boat's heater. I believe those are mounted behind the driver's kick plate, so you could pull that and then bypass the exchanger by connecting the in and out hoses together. You're boat heater would then not work but your cooling system should no longer leak and engine cooling should be fine. I haven't personally worked on one so others may be able to confirm this or provide an easier location to bypass the heat exchanger. You shouldn't need your boat heater for a couple months at least!

These do have to be winterized properly and if they are not, well the ice cracks them, so definitely a possibility as to why it failed.

If the heat exchanger is truly for your heater, easy fix ,so you can play during the summer and fix later. Also, in addition to Nautiqueparts.com Wakemakers also have them.
Like Pete said, this is a major point of failure if not winterized properly.

I’m not sure what it is for but it is part of the PCM engine cooling system.

Can you show us a picture of the heat exchanger?
This is what we think you are talking about.

I downloaded the PCM parts manual from marinepartsguys.com. It’s the transmission cooler.
