Higher rpms than normal? 97 sport.

Hi all, up on vacation for the week. If I recall, I turn about 3750 rpms at 36mph usually. However, last night we were skiing and I was at about 3100 @27mph and 4400@36. Boat is gt-40 and 1.23 transmission. Stock prop.

I did have about 200 lbs of people in the bow and only the driver behind the windshield, but this seemed really high to me. (Not sure if that would make any difference)

Transmission fluid was changed 10 ish hrs ago. Still at fill mark. Not discolored. No other issues with the boat.

Thoughts?


EDIT:. I'm not sure if the tach is just messed up? At idle this morning we had 1400. From the sound of the engine I know it was more like 800.

Still high while skiing, but maybe it's not really??? Maybe it's just off the mark?


We were about to see proper rpm at idle after we skied.

Pull your tach out of the dash, or crawl up under if there's enough room behind it and swipe the cylinder selector switch back and forth a few times, then put it back at 8. This will clean up the contacts in the tach, and will likely return your tach reading to normal. Mine's done similar where the tach was reading high, but I could tell the engine wasn't spinning that fast.

Yea, it ends up being kind of a routine maintenance item with some of the older tachs.
