Deepish Gouge in my G23 red metal flake

I am killing myself because I was backing up next to the dock and when reaching for the dock, I nudged the reverse down and sped up the boat along the dock, gouging. 1.5 foot section under the S in the Super lettering on the boat. The gouge runs along the red metal flake and a little deep and about half a pinky in width. The red still shows under the gouge. So how expensive was that mistake? Know any good repair folks in the Seattle area? I want to kill myself now.

How deep is the gouge? Is down to the fibers or just gel coat? Post a pic.

I'm no expert on this, but the key is finding a really good fiberglass repair guy because metal flake is difficult to repair. Also dark colors and red are really hard to match even with factory gel coat. You probably won't want to turn it in on your insurance, but call your insurance company and talk to the local insurance adjuster in your area and ask him who does the best fiberglass work. He should know who is good and who to avoid. You can ask your dealer who is good, but they may tell you that they are good just to get the business. The insurance adjuster will give you an unbiased opinion on work that he has seen.

I'm speaking from experience here because I learned these lessons the hard way.

The repair will most likely be less than $1000, maybe less than $500 depending on how deep it is.

If its not too deep, it may be something you can get out yourself. I we-sanded, compounded and polished my boat this Spring and have a lot of metal flake on the sides. Granted nothing was deep...I was able to lightly wet-sand with 2000 grit, then compound and then polish, came out perfect. Its when you go thru clear coat that you start having issues, if that is the case you need the original flake used and skills. Cost should not be too crazy, just don't expect to get it done till after season is over

Yea, looks kindof deep. Guessing that will need some filler and pro work since usually with new gel-coat filler they actually make the gouge a bit bigger so it sticks right and then redo it. With bright red flake like that....it will have to be done perfectly.
Google gelcoat flake repair so you know the process. I think he is right.....500-1000 depending on who you use.

First things first . You and your family are safe .

Contact a good detail company that specializes in paint correction . Try to see if you can color sand it and buff . I canÂ’t tell if that black in the scratch is the boat or from the thing that scratched it.

Many shops color sand so call around . You really have nothing to lose .

If repaired I will tell you metal flake isn’t easy or cheap . I paint for my living . Touching that up won’t be fun . It can be done though


I had a huge chunk taken out to the glass right on my nose of our 07 from a moron loading my boat when I was out if town. I gel repaired it . It really wasn’t bad but you have to do it right . You couldn’t see where the repair was

That sucks. We have red metal flake as well. I am sure you can find someone up there, the nice thing about living in a larger area. I know there is a guy that works with the Central Oregon Nautique dealer that does some pretty incredible work - but that would be a haul for you. My real point being that it can be fixed well if you find the right person.

Call Pacific Nautiques and ask who they use. Standard gel coat is easy to repair. Metalflake is best left to pros who work on these colors. Thats why you want a recommendation from the dealer.

The flake is actually pretty easy to match color wise, the issue most guys have is the Clear layer clouding up..... So there tends to be a haze where the repair is... It would be worth a long drive if you KNOW of a very good gel guy, I know in my neck of the woods these are very few and far between....

Sorry but that's not coming out via wetsand/polish.
