SANTE 210 Struggling WIth Ballast (New Guy, please help)

    Hello All!,

Fist post and I'm new to my 2011 SANTE 210, upgraded from a 2006 Moomba Mobius. With that said, it's got 295 hours on Z09 and I'm having power issues with it while trying to surf. I added #750 in each rear locker on top of factory hard tanks and it's struggling to get to 10 mph, so I upgraded to the ACME 1617 prop, and still having the same issue. It struggles to get to 10mph and will not get over 10.6 at all ...my moomba with a 323 motor had no problems moving more than that, and I see tons of you guys running more, so it can't be the amount of weight. It runs perfectly fine and has no problems at all accelerating without ballast. My theory (not tested yet) is the distribution of weight, as I did not add anything to the bow. Could this be it?

Yes add some weight up front and see what happens. When was the last time boat has had a full tune up? New plugs, wires, cap, rotor, new fuel filter these can all play a part in what your describing.

When we surf our 2010 210 with a 343 and a 617 prop and run on top of stock, a full 750 in port locker a half full 750 starboard locker. A bunch of people in the back. A 370 in the walkway to the bow. A 300 in the ski locker and a 650 in the bow at 10.8 mph-11.2mph for a mellow wave. and for a steeper wave we move the 370 from the walkway to the port seat all the way back at the same speed.
      Hope this helps.

        I meant 1617 prop not 617

I'm not real sure, but I've contacted the prior owner. I've had it 2 weeks and this was only the 3rd time I'm the water, 2nd surf session. I'll try some added bow weight since the physics kinda make sense, leveling the boat a little seems like it would help . I'll check plugs and wires tomorrow, as well .

Yeah, you're substantially heavier than I am, with the 343 so the 409 should move it eaaile .

Make sure you stop and let the waves pass because we have taken a wave over the bow before

You’re way overweighted in the front to rear ratio, You need weight In the bow to offset what you’re throwing in the rear.

I pulled my hard tanks and have 1100’s in the rear. I probably only run them 3/4 full , I have a sac piggy backed off the center tank holds about 350 in the bow , plus another 280lbs of lead shoved up in the nose as far toward as it can get. So that’s an extra roughly 630lbs in the bow over factory. Now that my daughters and wife are surfing more I am almost tempted to add another 350 up there .....

If if you don’t add weight to the bow your boat will never plane. PERIOD!!!!!

Also adding that much extra weight to the rear with nothing to the bow will turn your surf wake into complete garbage. It will be so steep and have next to zero pocket. Add weight to the bow and kick the hydro gate forward.

Agree with the prior post about front / rear ratio. Not familiar with the specs on the prop

And, in case you were filling both the port and stbd fat sacs together, only one side is needed for the side being surfed.

On port side we ran piggy back 750, arrow sac in the locker from the belly and lots of pop products fore and mid. One of the finest waves I’ve seen without tabs, etc.

And, do learn the driving technique described above.

Thanks for the help, guys! Now... if adjusting my ballasts doesn't help, other than a tune-up, any other things to look for?

Are 343 motor with same set up as yours and 200/ 100 each side rear lead and 100 front tip lead plus front ski locker fat sac planes great? 1617 prop also... Wave is waist high easy.

I am at sea level are you?

Same engine and set up here. I have that problem occasionally and think i'm over weighting the boat. I definitely need people in the bow when I'm totally full in all the ballast. I'm starting to think I don't need much extra ballast. I seem to have a good size wake without filling the extra ballast bags.

I agree with swat. A good rule of thumb is a 70/30 or 60/40 split from stern to bow. Weight in the back will give you wave height and belly/bow weight will elongate the wave. Easy way to see if the weight is the issue is don’t fill up all the way, test it and then fill some more. I’m running 910s in each locker, 600 in the belly and 400 in the bow with a wave shaper and I have no problem getting up to speed. If that doesn’t work I would look into fuel filter and or injectors. Pulling and reading the spark plugs will tell you how the boats running.

Added the Fly High Arrow sac and 150# from lead wake to the bow, seems to have fixed my issue somewhat. Still seems to struggle a little with 3000# of ballast, which doesn't seem right, but at least it's getting to 11mph now.
