1990 Sport

Electrical system shuts down when coil gets hot. new coil says I need an external resister. When I upgraded to electronic ignition 1992 I did not install external resistor. Does stock boat have an external resistor? Haven't been here in a while. Speaks well of the Nautique product. Any help would be appreciated.

Now that it is offseason, anyone have ideas about the problem above? When coil gets hot boat won't start/fire until the coil cools off.

Those symptoms are consistent with a coil that’s getting too much voltage due to lack or ballast resistor. I’m not sure if the stock 1990 Sport came with an external resistor, but if your coil says it needs an external resistor your options are to either get another coil that does not require an external resistor or wire in a resistor. Keep in mind your EI module likely needs full voltage so if you add a resistor you’ll have to run two separate wires 1. from ignition on the harness (purple wire) directly to the distributor and 2. from ignition through the resistor and to the coil.

Thanks for the reply! The 90 Sport coil description "The coil provided is used with an external ballast resister, which is designed to control the internal temperature of the coil windings. The resister cannot be repaired n any way, and if defective must be replaced. Maybe the resister failed. After 28 years I hope a new resister solves it.
