    rudder packing size

So im in the process of re packing the rudder. I was told by nautique that I needed 3/16 packing so I ordered both 3/16" and 1/4" just to be on the safe side. Pulled the packing nut off and its indeed 3/16" but it seems sloppy when i re pack the nut and slide it over the shaft on the rudder. With 1/4" its pretty snug on the rudder which seems to be how it should be. any input on which one I would need? Its on a 1999 super air nautique with a 1.25" rudder shaft.

I have just re packed mine on my 2001 super air and i used 1/4 on the rudder and 3/16 on the shaft. I haven't had it in the water since ,but the info i could find its the way it should be. I tried to put it the other way around but the 1/4 was way to tight on the shaft and the 3/16 was to loose on the rudder. Im hoping i have done it right.

i think 2002 and newer use a 3/16 on the rudder.

I packed my rudder 2 months ago on 2008–230 with 1/4 and it’s worked fine.

What is the reason for re packing the rudder? I have a 2004 SANTE that has a weird vibration in the steering wheel. It has nothing to do with the speed of the boat, and the boat does not vibrate. It is not constant, and I usually only notice it if I initiate a turn and then let the wheel go for a moment. It is hard to describe.
