    Staple in gel coat?

So this is the first year IÂ’ve kept my boat on the water. I was washing off some of the scum with a microfiber while it was floating and noticed a chip underneath about 3-4 inches in from the side. Also had a small sharp piece of metal sticking out. Pulled the boat out, took it home, got under there and pull out a small piece of metal with some pliers. Shaped like a staple, super small. There was some rust in there as well. This is right between the wheels while itÂ’s sitting on the trailer. Any insight to this? Is this a part of the construction? Did moisture cause this piece of metal to rust/swell and puncture through the gel coat?

I have a hard time believing it came from an outside source to get lodged in there.

Could have come from the trailer bunk carpet staple?

My only guesses are trailer bunk, which you don’t think to be the case, or the unlikely odds of hitting debris that had the staple in it. That’s a tough one.

        Do you beach the boat?

I'm guessing it's a small piece of trash that accidentally made it's way in the mold and didn't get cleaned out before applying gel... A few years ago when I cut out part of my floors to enlarge the battery box openings I just happened to cut right into a SS lock washer that was embedded in the fiberglass/resin. Scared me for a second thinking I'd hit something I shouldn't have, but once I figured out what was going on I kept cutting.

It's an assembly line and sometimes small things will make their way into the process that shouldn't. I would patch the gelcoat where you dug it out and go on using your boat!
