    Stuffing box

I just repacked my stuffing box and am concerned as to where the brass ring fits. It's obvious the brass rings sits up against the packing material, but is the brass riing first into the big nut followed by the packing, or does the packing go in first followed by the brass ring. This is on my 2001 model (year) Ski Nautique (rudder).

If you are talking about a flat brass washer It goes into the nut first then the packing. It then gets screwed onto the stuffing box/gland. This is so when you turn the nut the washer turns and not the packing. This way the packing is pressed into the gland.
