Sticking shifter lock - shifter not going back into the locked position at neutral

Neutral lock on shift is sticking so that the shifter can be pushed directly back into reverse from forward since the neutral lock doesnt always work.

i have to fiddle with it to get it to work
i tried wd 40, didnt work

let me know if anyone has any experience with this!
