mid 90's transmission
Has anyone heard of a " drop down gear" in the transmission from a mid '90's nautique? I was told that this " drop down gear" has stripped and is whats causing my idle grinding noise. Also was quoted about 3,500 for a replacement transmission.

Around 1989 most Nautiques went from a 1:1 transmission to a 1.23:1 gear reduction transmission that also changed the angle from the output of the engine to the driveshaft, so the engine could sit more level. As far as a grinding noise... what does the transmission fluid look like when you pull the dipstick? These can be rebuilt in many cases if a part or two is found to be bad.
Does it grind in both forward and reverse?
In any case, $3,500 seems like a ballpark price for a new transmission installed. More or less.

Is the noise really a grinding? There is a very common issue with the damper plate that causes a rattling sound at idle. If that's what you're hearing, (a) you can just not worry about it because it really doesn't hurt anything, and (b) it is easy to fix and the part is not too expensive.

no they said its specifically the drop down gear. And that there is no replacement or repair for it. just want to make sure this is all true!!
