    Rudder cinch and packing nut

There are two nuts on top of my rudder. I assume the top nut is the packing nut and the bottom nut is supposed to be tight up against the packing nut. Boat is a 2011 sport 200. I was greasing the rudder and noticed that the bottom nut was loose. Can someone confirm it should be tight against the packing nut? Picture attached. thank you.

You are correct. The bottom nut is a locking nut to keep the amount of pressure/tension at the correct amount. You do want a slight leak to keep the shaft lubricated. Only a few drops per minute.

Wait, this is the rudder shaft, not the drive shaft. The hose you see there is a remote grease point. I don’t think you want the rudder packing to drip water. The grease is there to do the lubrication.

Correct Charlesml3. I may have the names for the two nuts incorrect. I just need to know if the bottom nut should be tight against the top but.

        Thanks

Yes, it should. The bottom nut is a lock nut to keep the top one from turning on it's own.
