im getting confused reading all of the posts on this topic. My marina said I could use quicksilver 25/40. We are in Buffalo ny. Help. What oil should I use?

GT-40 engines take straight 40w oil . Don’t get so caught up with what other oils boat owners use ; it will only confuse you. Everyone tries to be the expert on what oil to use or wants to lead you to some expensive Designer Oil . Straight 40w is very cheap oil to purchase and I too had a GT-40 engine and ran house branded straight 40w oil for 16 years with no problems.Keep it simple and go to WalMart and buy some straight 40 W oil end of story

Not sure how much of a difference it REALLY makes, but oils have changed quite a bit since the GT-40 was produced. Most oils now don't have the proper amount of zinc for flat tappet engines. That's why so many people here run the VR1. It is still high zinc, and is supposedly better for these older engines. Given your northern location, if your going to be running in 50 degree temps you definitely want to run a multi-grade oil, or make sure you let the boat warm up before running hard.
I used to run Castrol 15/40 GTX Diesel that used to have the needed additives and was SM (automotive engine) approved in my old GT40 block.
But they removed an exemption from an emissions/content perspective that allowed these oils to certify as SM, so your choices are even more limited.
The idea of running the 20/50 weight VR1 always made nervous as I never heard a explanation for why it would be okay to run with a higher viscosity than what the engine is designed for.
