I always assumed the weak light is designed that way for saftey.
When I have had to use the light for docking it seems to work just fine.

I have the same question. Very weak docking lights. Something twice as bright would be good...without being so bright that it would blind others

As long as we are all clear that docking lights are not headlights. They are to be used when approaching a dock not to see while driving on the lake at night.

On my lake most people incorrectly believe that they should illuminate them at all hours of darkness. Stupid but that's the way it is when boaters are not educated. In the Navy we operated under "darken ship" often when underway. No lights of any kind, open water far from normal navigation routes.
