1996 supersport engine sputter / rev up. Gas tank removal, pick tube, etc problem?

The motor a couple of times had idled high and then stalled. Or have been going and it speeds up and then down and stalls, and then takes a couple of minutes to start back up.
I have already replaced fuel filter in canister. Is there a inline fuel filter on my model?? and what do I need to do to check the pick tube for clogging? Should I remove gas tank and clean it out? Any help would be great, thanks
