Can't Get Prop Off with Puller. Any tips?

I attempted to change my stock prop to a spare 1579 that I have, but couldn't get the stock prop off. I have an Acme prop puller and used it as directed, but the prop wouldn't budge even with hitting the puller hard with a hammer. I only had a 16oz claw hammer when I tried to remove the prop. I'm not sure if a heavier hammer would do the trick or not.

I hit the puller with the hammer very hard several times. I eventually gave up because I was afraid I might miss the puller and hit the prop causing damage to it.

I think I was lucky with my Malibu. Changed the prop twice on that boat and never even needed a hammer. Just tightened the puller and the prop popped lose.

    Any suggestions?

Try using a brass hammer vs a steel hammer. The brass hammer has more of a solid blow/strike and will not kick back like a steel hammer. I always use a brass hammer when removing my props. Just a thought.

Sounds like I'll be headed to Harbor Freight.

You need a little heat. A heat gun works good. I have also used a hair dryer.

Tighten the puller up, tap on it a bit, tighten it up just a little bit more and go to Harbor Freight. It will probably be loose by the time you get back... Just make sure you have the prop nut on a few threads. Heat can definitely help, but I have not had to use heat or a brass hammer yet...

I have been told that moving the puller around the prop can help too. Because the c clamp type puller isn't square it doesn't provide a even pressure to the prop an shaft. Not sure if this really matters.

The last time I had a really stuck prop I left the puller on for hours. Hit it many times. moved it around the prop and it didn't budge. Put a blow torch on it and got it off in a few seconds.

Heat may be the key. How long did you have to heat it with the torch?

Took about a minute but that wasn't direct heat the whole time. I heated a bit then came off then heated another side of the prop then came off. Trying to give the prop time to spread the heat without applying too much to one part.

Torching the prop hub generally works for stubborn props
