Separate New Temp Gauge for 2003 SANTE

Hello all, I know I have seen this posted somewhere during my time on the sight.......however, I cannot find what I was looking for on the search bar.

We all know the gauge issues with the faria box. I use a heat gun now......and all was great last season with no issues of overheating. However, it gets old shooting the heat gun all day to make sure and have some peace of mind. So.....I would like to set up its own separate temp gauge with out using the faria box. I have gotten close to a solution in the search bar, but not yet. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks D

I don't know what you mean by using a heat gun. But, to save the Faria box, disconnect the speedo pitot tubes from the box and then no water will be in the box for your speedo. Use your Perfect Pass your speedo and have some piece of mind. I just got a tube connector and put them together so, that water wouldn't pour into the bilge.
As for the temp gauge, if you can find a similar looking 2" guage you can put it in place of the existing guage and just leave that connector hanging. All the guages are in series so, it just won't be in line. Then you'll have to figure out how to wire it to the engine to, might be able to run it to the same sensor and then up to the dash. What is the purpose of having a separate guage? You don't trust the existing? If you wanted to get by without having to do too much, you could mount one in the engine bay.

I am assuming you mean that the original gauge isn't working anymore and you have been using one of those cool laser heat sensor guns to check the temps on you engine block to ensure you don't over heat? Seems a sketchy way to do it. But I guess its better than driving off blindly.

Did both of your gauges stop working? or just the one? I started having issues with my rpm gauge at the end of last season but not the speedo. And when I opened up my gateway box it was perfectly dry. Is it possible that just the gauge itself is messed up and not the box? If so I think each one can be bought on NP for $200ish. Although spending 200 to trouble shoot is annoying.

Your spot on......I have been using the heat gun for piece of mind. I had over heat issues from shredded impeller....and it took a while to get all the pieces out of the loop. By mid summer I was not checking it all the time. I am completely aware of the Faria issue and the fixes. Perfect pass shows me what I need to know from that stand point.

I was just hoping I could disconnect temp gauge and run a direct wiring to the sensor or sensors......rather than chase wires and locations, I thought I would see if anyone had done this before.

My Faria I think is typical......all gauges come on and off at different time during use.......bone dry inside.

        Thank you both for feedback
        D

The real solution is to replace the gateway box with a 1246 and install this gauge kit:

I had a similar gauge problem on my 2005 216 Limited. The large speedo and tachometer always worked, and I could page through the menu of those to find temperature, pressure etc. However, the four smaller gauges were all on the fritz and would only occasionally come on. I took apart the Faria box expecting to find water, but it was bone dry and the circuitry all looked new with no signs of corrosion. I then bought a single fuel gauge to "test" the problem last season. That new fuel gauge works like a champ and has never cut-out since last year. The other 3 are still mostly not working.

So, it may not be a Faria box problem. Do you have any indication on your tachometer about engine temp? If so, I would bet it is just the gauge. You can get a new one for around $90 on NP.

On another note, I am noticing that they are running out of the 03-06 style gauges. What I was thinking of doing is buying the 07 gauge, then replacing the decal and needle from the old gauge. It looks like the ranges are the same and roughly in the same clock position, so I speculate that this may work...

That is whats happening........speedo and tach work....thermo comes on occasionally for 2 seconds and then goes to -. I like your thoughts for a quick check to see if its the gauge.......boy am I clueless....thank you for hitting me in the head Thats going to be the plan! I think Jeffs idea is the complete fix.....and I agree with him 100%....but I am poor right now and thats not a option. Thank you very much for chiming in. D
