Fuel spill in bilge, cleanup tips

I made a mistake whilst replacing the FCC filter on my 08 210, I must have either put the retaining collar on squint or not fully pushed the FCC into its mating half ahead of tightening the collar. Either way, the FCC canister dropped and fuel has spilt into the bilge. All now fixed and correctly fitted, however I clearly have a strong fuel smell from the bilge. I need to clean some of the carpet that got soaked with fuel, I‘ve flooded some water into the bilge, added an emulsifying bilge cleaner and pumped the dirty water out. Any other tips or tricks to remove the remaining fuel and strong smell? Before anyone asks , I’m disposing of the bilge water responsibly, not emptying into the Loch/lake.

    many thanks

If you've got all the liquids up, next thing would be lots of ventilation. Most of your odor is gas that volatilized into the air, so get a lot of air flow through there. Open all the hatches you can and get a fan going.
