Ski nautique doesn't run in water.

Hi everyone,


I have a Ski Nautique boat, model 1998 with GT 40 engine (320 HP). The engine is new (and before it's run-in period).
The problem I have is as follows - when the boat is on a trailer - dry - engine starts without any problems and run smoothly
(water to the cooling system is delivered using gardening hose). But when the boat is on water there is no way to start the engine.
Sparks on spark plugs are present, but spark plugs themselves are getting covered in fuel after few trials of starting the engine.

Have anyone met such problem before?

Interesting. I had that same exact situation way back in ‘98 but my boat had a carb. I was on the ramp at White Lake NC, backed the boat and trailer into the water, the boat wouldn’t start. Just turned over and over. I’d pull it out and up off the ramp and it would start and run fine (with a fake a lake). Back down into the water, nothing. This was the 4th of July weekend ‘98 and I was making complete idiot of myself trying to launch our boat then pulling it right back out. Each time having to get back into the boat launch line. After about the 3rd it 4th attempt, I said screw it and just floated the boat off of the trailer and over to the dock. Along comes one of the guys from White Lake Marina. He saw my engine cowling open and asked if I needed help. Yes please I said. He went right to the carburetor and found both floats in the fuel bowls were stuck and not letting any fuel in. For some reason, up on level ground, I’d get enough fuel for the engine to run but while on the ramp, with the nose of boat up in the air, I wouldn’t get any fuel. Weird. After we worked the floats a little with some WD-40, life was good. Never had that happen again.

You might try posting over on CCF (Correct Craft Fan). There are lots of GT40 people over there that may have an idea. How long after a no start in the water does the boat sit before you start it on the trailer? How far do you travel before putting in the water? Wondering if a faulty wire is starting the pumps and injectors to flood it while traveling???
