Alright new to the forums but not to the boats! I have gone thru hours of forums trying to find some help with my new to me 1979 ski tique with a 302 commander. First trip out and she is idleing great go to take off and she starts popping out of the carb. Now I have played with it for a week or so and I’ve figured out I’d adjust the time to around 30* then I can get it up on plane without it popping and backfiring thru the carb but then while I’m moving I have to turn the cap to around 15* if I want it to actually have any power. Anyone of any ideas of things to try ? This thing is killing me!

I had a '79 with the PCM motor. Are you still using points or did you upgrade to electronic ignition? Also, my timing had drifted a bit, but eventually figured out the chain had slack from years of use, so the timing index numbers didn't actually match the timing. I found my happy point and made some marks for reference.
Also, is your carb new or rebuilt recently?

It has an electronic ignition. The carburetor was rebuilt with probably only 10hrs on it. I have read about sock in the timing chain but have not gone checking anything for that. The previous owner says it ran great but of course not the same experience for me. The weird thing to me is that I’m starting off all the way at 30* and have to bring it back to 15* when I’m on plane. Isn’t it suppose to be reverse of that when the timing advances? When it’s idleing at 15* it has a very subtle miss that I can hear but goes away once I set it all the way to 30 *. If it wasn’t for the loss of power I would keep it at 30* but it has not power until I start rotating the distributor cap and then it is kind of like I’m giving it throttle and it goesssss! I’m going to be posting on correctcraftfan.com once I get approved by an admin.

I checked the firing order and everything checked out. Brand new plugs. I think I have done all the simple stuff. I spoke with someone today and he mentioned looking to see if the advance springs are still good and that the distributor isn’t sticking. Hopefully that sheds some light on it when I get back into it tomorrow
