Ridiculously tight raw water strainer cup?

    Gang,

Decided it was time to clean the raw water strainer yesterday and wow, that turned out to be a JOB. The cup is ridiculously tight. I had to use a strap wrench and I'm not talking about breaking it loose. I had to use the strap wrench the ENTIRE TIME just to turn the cup. Same thing putting it back on.

The one on my old 99 Air Nautique was super easy. No tools required to take it off or put it back on. My 2017 SANTE 230 was not as easy, but I could do it by hand.

Anyone else on a newer Nautique tried cleaning the raw water strainer yet?

Ya. Same issue. It came off stiff. I had to replace it due to a leak and the new one spun right on.

I had to use a strap wrench to loosen mine, but then it was easy to turn by hand. Sounds like something is wrong with yours. Clearly you would've notice galled treads if it was cross-threaded when it was installed at the factory.

16hrs on mine and just cleaned yesterday. It certainly was pretty tight.

and... I’m glad I cleaned it. Lots of junk in there already... thought it would be cleaner.

use a strap wrench, not the biggest deal

The threads look fine. No galling. For some reason it's just incredibly tight. I can't turn it by hand at all.

I've emailed the service manager at my dealer. Let me see what they want to do here. This just doesn't seem right to me.

Mine is very tight also. The dealer told me that is the way it is. The cup on my 2004 210 was much easier.

2019 GS 20. Strainer is a ridiculously tough to turn, and a giant PITA to get threaded. Getting the thread started, and it spun on should take 15 seconds, not 15 minutes. I'm considering changing to a Perko brass strainer.

gs22. removed mine at the lake the other day to empty. it was tight, but removable by hand.

now getting it to thread back on, that is another story. super difficult. I kept thinking it was starting to cross thread. no where as easy as my 2000 Air was. i just had visions of being towed back to the marina because i couldn't get the stupid strainer back on.

Totally agree. My 99 Air's strainer was super easy on and off. I have no idea why/what changed. My dealer replaced mine under warranty and it's better, but still not what it was in my old boat.

I was at my dealer and he had one in his hand. I asked him about it . Seems that they are all the same. Very tight and you have to watch crossing it when reinstalling. He said he takes them out of the boat to service them. Which is what i did with mine. Not going to be good if you suck something up out on the lake. Plus they relocated it on the 2018 230 and its a real pain i think.

Holy cow I'm glad I saw this. Mine is the same way but check this out......

Just got the boat (used, but new to me 16 200 Sport) and decided I'd pull the strainer just to see if anything was in it and try while not on the lake in case I had to do it while on the lake. After failing to get it off using my GI Joe Kung Fu grip I went and got a oil filter wrench. It was hard to get off even with the oil filter wrench. I figured some idiot cross threaded it but after closely inspecting both the bowl and the strainer I couldn't see anything wrong with it. Went to put it back on and it was incredibly difficult to get started. At that point I decided it was time for it to go. Bought a new one off Amazon, tried it straight out of the box and it was super easy to get it to start and thread so I marked it up as one of those things and installed it in the boat. Job done, all is right with the world again.

That was about 5 hours of boat time and 2 weeks ago (been a very bad summer up here). Decided to call it a summer and started winterizing the boat. Went to pull the bowl on the strainer to dump out the water, the dang thing is exactly the same as the old one was and I had to use an oil filter wrench to get it off.

But wait there's more....... I kept the old one figuring I could use it for parts someday. I go pick it off the shelf and try taking the bowl off, it comes of effortlessly. I try threading it back on, no problem whatsoever. I even try cross threading it a bit, doesn't happen unless I really try.

I'm thinking the plastic on either the bowl or the strainer is swelling from either the heat or the water. I'm leaning towards the water as the boat was cool both times I tried to take the bowl off. After seeing this I'm thinking about contacting perko to see if they know about this being a problem.

I wonder if a teflon lube such as this would help? I used to use this stuff on the o-ring/threads of the plastic lid of my old pre-filter strainer on my pool.
