1997 sport nautique steering cable

Last fall I replaced the steering cable in my boat. Certainly solved the hard steering issue, but now 2 people have driven it and say "why is your strong so sloppy". Tonight the driver said it was worse when turning left.

I had two choices in cable from planet nautique. If I recall, the OE cable and the teleflex. I also think the guy at pn said the teleflex was longer, but that it shouldn't make any difference. Wondering if this is my problem, or how I can make the steering more responsive. It's "drifty" from 11 to 1.

Anything I can do? I think drivers are struggling to keep it straight in the course.

For what its worth - I don't THINK I have the black rudder tab. (googling since I posted this)

It sounds like your helm is failing. I had the same situation on the '98 Ski Nautique that I restored. That boat had 2,000 hours, and after I replaced the cable and the helm, the steering was perfect.

Sorry, yes, nautique parts.

Trouble is, I have 370 hours, not 2000!

When you say the helm failed, it seems there are some bushings that wear out.

I found the nut at the stem to be loose. See video. Tightened that up.

There is still pay in the wheel (see second video), but that play seems to be in the connection between the steering shaft and rack. There is a bit of up down on the wheel which I'd guess is the bushings in the tilt mechanism, but it's the rotational play in trying to solve for.

We'll test again today and see if it is any better.
