2001 Sport Nautique GT 40 Starter

WE have a 2001 Sport Nautique with a GT40 Pleasurecraft Ford 351 marine engine. The engine wont turn over. All I get is a clicking from the ECC module on the back of the motor. Breakers are not tripped. I have replaced the battery. The connections look good. Could it be the ECC module, the relay or the starter? Any help would be much appreciated!

Certainly not the ECC module. It's most likely the starter or the solenoid on the side of it. You'll have to do more troubleshooting to know for sure.

Sorry, finally got some light on it. It's the EEC test block that clicks. Seems like no power to the starter. Battery is fine, 12.8 v.

Are you sure it isn't the starter relay (located right behind that) that's clicking? Those fail all the time and cause exactly what you're seeing.

Agreed. Sounds like either the starter relay or starter solenoid.

Check your ground from the motor. It can also produce this symptom.

The easiest way to test ground vs. solenoid is to touch a screw driver between the power post and the yellow/red 12v on the starter. If it cranks it is most likely the solenoid under the EEC tester you're referencing.

Otherwise, you can get out your volt meter and test.

Wiggle your throttle while you try starting it and see if that engages the starter....

I had the same problem...One of the wires came off of the fuel pump in the fcc....once I hooked it back up it started just fine

I think it's possessed!!
I replaced the starting relay, no good, would still just click. I pulled the starter, took it and had it checked out. It was fine. I re installed it. The motor turned over fine! ran the boat 10-15 minutes in the yard with no problems Started it and stopped it a few times. I guess it was the starter connection even though it looked fine. Brought it to the lake today, put it in the water, checked it out, Seemed fine. When we went to leave, I was going to shut the boat off, hit the stop button and it kept running! OK, backed the trailer in, put the boat on, still wouldn't shut off. Turned the breaker off under the dash for the main power and still ran. I pulled the safety lanyard and that didn't work either! WTH! So much for the safety lanyard! Ended up pulling the wires off the fuel pump until it ran out of gas. GEEZ! any ideas?

Sounds like maybe the relay isn't wired correctly, or the wiring has rotated to the point that something is touching something that it shouldn't be.

May also be the keypad going bad, but I doubt it.

Makes sense, but it ran fine in the yard, Maybe a connection loosened up on it and is shorting out. Will check.

Starter relay looks fine. Going to change the Keypad. Starting to have some other issues with that too.

Replaced keypad. Didn’t solve the problem. Double checked wiring. All looks good. Boat still won’t shut off. Even the local Marina is stumped.

Not yet, I took the boat from our local marina to the Nautique dealer. They never saw that problem before. They were in touch with the factory and they recommended changing the “PCM” module I think they called it. It’s the module that has all the circuit breakers under the dash. It is on order and should be here soon. Let you know how I make out.
