PCM Engine Knock 2001 SAN 210

Good morning All,,,,,,,,,hoping the video attachment comes through but please let me know if it doesn't.

Picked up my boat after a long winter with a knocking sound coming from the engine at low rpm when the transmission is engaged.. Mechanic changed cap, rotor and plugs and nothing changed. He thought it might be the lifters. When I drove off, the boat started to vibrate similar to a damaged prop. Vibration and knock disappeared at higher speeds then returned when I slowed down. Once in neutral, all quiet again. I then discovered, due to improper winterizing, the V drive was crack and I had water in transmission as seen in the pic below. Mechanic now believes it could be a head gasket and/or a possible engine rebuild required. I've read some threads with similar circumstances and some say dampening plate. The plate looked fine but I believe he said you could move some of the springs by hand. V drive was replaced, tranny is the same and I'm assuming was flushed, all put back together but with the same outcome and knocking/thump sound. Feel like we are throwing darts and I think an engine rebuild might be excessive. A leak down test was suggested but not performed. If anyone as had a similar occurrence, please let me know how your repaired

    Thanks
