starter continues turning when in neutral

I have a 2006 226 and while running when I put the boat in neutral the starter continues to turn,

The stop button did not work and I had to turn off power switch off to stop.

I think there is something wrong with the keypad and its sending the signal to continue to start the boat to the starter. I started it yesterday and no problems so it's intermittent.
Anyone see something similar

sounds like the starter solenoid. not sure if it's external or built in on that model, but on my older boat it had an external solenoid that went bad and showed those exact symptoms.
