2008 210 PCM V-drive leaking gear oil. Anyone have service manual?

Anyone ever have this issue? I cant find anything on it after endless searches.

I think my rear output shaft seal is leaking on the underside of the v-drive. As you know its extremely inconvenient to get in there, so looking for some insight from anyone who knows about pulling and/ or servicing the v-drive. Its 2008 SANTE 210 with ZR6390 and Power Plus 1.48:1 v-drive.

Lets start with backstory... I just purchased this boat that had been left out in the rain with the plug in. Previous owner had a mechanic come out, who hit the start button and caused damage. A new short block was installed, tranny is fine, and the v-drive had a milkshake inside. I drained and re-filled the v-drive, and now I have oil in the bilge. Its clear, so its not engine oil, and its not tranny fluid. Now the entire bilge is oily water, so its hard to tell where its coming from at this point. When I reach behind the v-drive to the output shaft, its oily and nasty. I suspect this seal is the problem. I will eventually degrease and dry out the bilge and put something under it to see if it drips when not in use for positive identification.

I'm trying to find a parts schematic/ illustration/ service manual for this v-drive but cant find anything. I dont know if I can just pull the drive shaft out the bottom of the hull, and then reach around and pull out the seal and push in a new one? OR if I have to pull the v-drive? (on that note, would I have to pull the tranny AND v-drive?)

I dont know if the seal is held in by a retaining clip or cover plate? I think the seal is part #: R047249 here: https://www.skidim.com/prodinfo.asp?number=R047249

Anyone have a service manual or illustration?

I called PCM and they wouldnt talk to me- said I had to go through a dealer. Then the Dealer says they wont give me any parts illustration, as that's what a service manual is for and they wont share it.

    Any help is GREATLY appreciated!

Not sure what v drive you have but some of them were notorious for the bottom plate gasket leaking. Mine was when I bought it and all it needed was the bolts tightened. Others replace the gasket which is a pretty simple job. Might be something to check first.

Mine is the PCM Power Plus 1.48:1. I thought I read about tightening bolts somewhere, but I thought it was for the Walters?

I havent looked for bolts under mine yet, and a full degrease and dry bilge is definitely warranted for positive identification. I will check to see about any bolt tightening.

In the meantime, I just found a thread about v-drive oil leaking out the vent. Got me wondering if I just over-filled the unit with too much gear oil, and when I'm under way with the bow high, it comes out the vent?

Hopefully that’s what it is and not a seal. Big relief if it is!

If it is the seal I can give you some instructions on how to replace it because I replaced a seal on my 2008 210 v-drive this past spring

I have uploaded some pictures detailing the process along with specs for the seal to buy. I bought one from PCM but the specs should enable you to find one cheaper. I had to remove the rudder and prop and then remove the prop shaft to replace the seal. I also found another forum for how to drain and refill the gear oil, which has a picture attached. Let me know if you have any questions.

Hey- thank so much for sharing this. I still have not positively identified what's going on. I've just been watching, adding Dawn soap and degreaser to my bilge to see if I continue to find oil in the bilge or if it will eventually clear out.

It does appear to still be leaking... not horrible, but I hate a dirty, oily bilge. I'm drying out now, so I can put a pan under and see if its the front or the rear seal. I hope its the front like yours so I dont have to pull the vdrive, but not sure I will be so lucky.

Did you do the rear seal too? Or just this front one?

Also, you said you had to pull the rudder and prop shaft. In hindsight, could you have done it without pulling those? It looks like you can pull the couplers off, and then disassemble the front of the vdrive and get to that seal without pulling the rudder and shaft?

                Thanks again!

If you have a floor hatch that is removable...sometimes you can remove the prop and pull the shaft out into the boat so you don't have to remove the rudder to pull the shaft toward rear. If you do remove the shaft, good time to replace the cutlass bearing in the strut under boat.

Good points. I thought of that too.

I still wonder though- can I replace the front vdrive seal (toward the bow), without removing the shaft? Looks like you can just unbolt and pull it off straight over the shaft.
