Exhaust sound for 2002-2009 196 Ski Nautique

Has anyone given their 196 the louder dual exhaust of the early to mid 80’s Nautique, can it be done?

The single exhaust isn’t lined up with the risers so it’s not like just adding another exhaust hose would do it. You’d need two new holes in your transom and you’d have to cover up the old one. That’s ignoring that the stringers are laid out differently and won’t accommodate two exhaust pipes like they used to. I’m sure you could work something out but it’s a lot of hassle for what you’d get out of it.

This is really more of a ccfan question but I’m pretty sure you can skip the muffler and add a y pipe. Not my area of expertise though. I’ve just seen a few different generations of exhaust system up close.

Thanks for the replies, you mean, exit above the transom stringer area or right above the platform

You can replace the muffler with a Centek Y Pipe. Lots of guys have done this swap on the CCF forum. Just do a google. The thing is, your boat is going to be very loud. At idle not too bad. But as soon as the hull parts from the water, sitting in the back seat will literally be unbearable. After all, you are straight-piping a small block Chevy. I serious considered it for mine but I use my boat as a ski boat. Maybe down the road when I swap the engine I’ll add silent choice exhaust but not anytime soon.

Once the muffler is removed and y pipe added, is there room inline to add a older tube style muffler or make one like it larger to handle the 2 into 1 id make mine of stainless and add the wave like baffle of the old fiberglass tube mufflers, do you think that would work.

There are definitely mufflers made by centek that would fit in line. I would also look at the possibly drilling through one of the baffles in your current muffler and see if that give you the sound you want. I’ve looked inside mine. There are different chambers and walls. One two inch hold on the last baffle shooting straight into the 4” outlet would probably sound better without being unbearable. But this is only assumption.

I was checking out options, might try the y pipe then slip in a Hardin marine 4” silencer, heard some sound clips, sounds nice and not annoying
