2001 gt40 is running about 180 engine temp when idling, drops to normal 160 when running. Anyone see this or have an idea what is? I just replaced the impeller, so that shouldnt be the issue.

I'm going to assume prior to the impeller change the boat was running 160 all day, everyday and that the impeller was simply changed as preventative maintenance....if that's true then here are a few easy things to check:
Check all the hoses leading up to the inlet side of the water pump. A loose connection on the inlet side can suck a small amount of air which will cause suction issues at idle resulting in higher temps. Engine temps usually drop to 160 when running because the water is being forced into the hull pickup under pressure. Check all the hose clamps using a 5/16 nut driver to ensure they are tight. Also, make sure the water strainer cup is on tight with the proper o-ring. I just dealt with a similar issue on my 02 SANTE - tracing back through the system I found the o-ring on the water strainer cup to be just a standard o-ring rather than the proper, thick, square o-ring (a little treat from the previous owner). I installed a new Sherwood o-ring on the strainer cup, now i'm running 165 all day long.
In addition, check the overall condition of your water cooling hoses. These hoses are now 20 years old and starting to show their age. Mine are pretty dry rotted and cracked on my boat so I bought a new 6 ft section of 1 1/4 inch steel wire reinforced water hose to replace all of the cooling hoses on the inlet side of the water pump (for now). It's worth taking a look at and if your cooling hoses aren't looking too good I would replace as those can develop air leaks as well which affects cooling system performance.
