PCM 330 Running Temp

I wanted to know what someone else’s engines running temp is? Mine is a little above 175, seems a little high, and I have steam coming out the exhaust which makes me think it is too hot.

Thoughts?

Simple check when running hot - make sure all the intake side water hose clamps are tight. Also make sure the strainer bowl is snug. Any leaks will suck air reducing the water flow leading to what you describe.

175 is perfectly fine. Right where it should be. The steam you're seeing is normal. Most likely it was a day with low humidity and you'll get exhaust steam then.

It is a little higher than normal for that engine. When was your impeller last replaced?

It was just replaced 3 hours ago due to a broken piece that caused a slight overheat incident (225F max temp).

I’m not sure if the piece all be it small may be clogging the thermostat from fully opening? Thoughts?

That would be a good place to start. It should be running around 160 to 165 degrees.

My 2004 SN 196 is at 160-162 solid as a rock. Need to check thermostat housing for potential impeller bits. Could be causing a partial blockage. Make sure the new impeller is PCM brand, others have been known to cause problems, Sierra brand particularly at fault.

Do you think it could’ve been an off brand impeller issue?

That temperature won't hurt the engine, but I would be concerned that whatever is causing it may allow it to go higher at any time.

If the impeller is failing, it could continue falling apart and strand you.

I would figure it out sooner than later.

Rebuild? Any chance they put a 180 degree thermostat in the rebuild? From recollection, these boats run a 160 degree thermostat...whereas cars typically run 180 or hotter. Could be a simple explanation for the above average temps.
