    96 Sport Gelcoat questions

With the weather warming up here in Canada and the rebuilt GT40 going into the boat next week, I am starting to think about the gelcoat restoration phase of my project.

I've done a lot of searching on CCF, here, and other boat sites in the past week regarding Gelcoat restoration.

I have boiled down my reading to the following questions....

    1) Current gelcoat condition is poor. All decals are broken or peeling or already gone. I need to remove everything. I have read about using spray on oven cleaner. I have failed to find how to use it though. Do you just spray it on, wait a few mins and start peeling? What is a good scraper tool that won't damage gel?

    2) I'm sure I need to start with wetsanding and not skip directly to cutting compound. But there are wild recommendations across the online world about what grit to start with. I've sort of landed at starting with 800, yet some people go much more aggressive. Thoughts? See pics below for current condition.

    3) With so much wetsanding, I'm really interested in doing it with mechanical assistance. I've read its best to use a DA sander in a grid pattern. But for the 3M rubbing compound and polishing phase, everyone says to use a rotary polisher like the Dewalt DPW849. Do I really need to purchas a DA and a rotary? That adds up fast.

    4) I'm guessing to do this right, I should remove the rub rail. I really like the teal insert. The rubrail jacket is beat up in some places so I will probably replace it. Can I re-use the original coloured teal insert in the new rubrail?

    Thanks guys!

your boat is older than my 03, but I took all decals off my boat for a simple look (some people hate it.....but all good) I have experience working on granite and the outer top surfaces (a lot softer than granite as well) I use soap and a flat razor on the most angled position you can get to get it started without!!! a steep and that digs unto the gel coat. If it does little, the sand or oxidation process can get rid of it, but I had luck with no digging in. The soap lets it slide a lot better. Just a drop is fine. I tries it first on the rear where its not so exposed. My big Air decals in the middle port and starboard were a little more work and it would peel when it started and then stop and rip off. I was able to again start it and continue until it was all off. I had a lot of oxidation and could clearly see the areas the decals were on. I used the 3M 3 or 4 stage process to get it back to original look with no sign of decals. Again, not sure if it would work on you age and withered boat, but I thought I would share it with you.

      I used liquid and pads.

I am not sure if anyone else has used these products and what their success was, but it worked for me, and I also used

      Then 3M 3rd step polisher

Someone in our club paints boat registration numbers, and I had him do mine last year. The original numbers were stick-on decals, so probably in about the same shape / age as the other stickers. He used a heat gun to soften them up, and then they came right out. I needed to remove the registration tag and used my heat gun again. Worked like a charm.
