I was having the same problem and couldnt figure anything out for quite some time. I have a JVC head unit and I finally called JVC Customer Service and was able to get the answers I needed.

In my case, I have to turn the Amp Gain on the head unit to "High Power". Its default was "Low Power" and the head unit was automatically cutting out the speakers when the volume got to 32 or above on the dial. After turning to "High Power" on the internal amp gain...it wakes up the neighbors across the lake and never misses a beat.

    Good luck.

      RE: speaker problem?

Actually it kind of sounds like the amp is cutting out. The speakers really have no overload protection, they go as high as you take them and distort and eventually blow. The amp will cut out or clip if it's overpowered.

Try turning down the gain setting on your amp that handles the speakers in question.

I am thinking that bama's head unit is a Clarion CMD-4, and I am not sure if it has any settings like joel is suggesting.
