Teak deck repair tips

Project time! Giving life back to my teak swim deck of an ‘01 SAN. Have the Starbrite 3-step kit, seems to do the job by most people’s accounts. But the teak needs some love first. Recommendations on sandpaper grit, approach, tactics to use? Thx!

Did someone stain the teak? I’m normally against sanding. No matter what grit you use it will be too slick. But if that’s stain or paint I think it’s your only option. 80 maybe then a 120 is what I’d probably go with. Get that off of there and then use a nice teak oil. It’ll take a lot of coats this year but if you clean it thoroughly now and keep teak oil on it you can do a light coat every few months going forward.

hal2814 Previous owner “thinks” is was teak oil, but bought the most readily available kind and is a very low maintenance guy, leading me to believe I should just sand it down and start anew.

Whatever that it, it’s not teak oil. It’s probably some waterproof stain.

Yep. Spend a couple of hours sanding that down, then just hit it with teak oil. Don't bother with the three-step kits. Sanding and oiling is what I always do, and the results are always great.

Here's the last one I did (on my recently-sold 1999 SNOB).

I use Starbrite teak oil. I do a lot of these, so I buy it by the gallon on Amazon.

Jeff - do you prefer brush or wiping on with a rag?

I use a rag. I usually end up applying about ten coats. Apply one and give it time to soak in, then apply another.

Hey all,
just in the process or redoing our teak deck. Previously it had a "aqua deck" product on it and was slippery and didn't look great.


I applied this product from the local paint store and then used a paint scraper to remove the old decking oil.


This is where its at now, dry and then washed down with water



Just wondering if I put teak oil on it now if it will take in all areas as some low spots that still have some decking oil.
Other option is to put more of the remover on there & scrub it out rather than just a scraper which I used the first time.

I wouldn’t start applying teak oil until it’s all off.

I've had problems in the past with swimstep's being super slick.

The boat dealer did the last refinish and it wasn't slick at all. But it needs a full refresh now.

I'm thinking of using a stripper to remove the old material and then a teak brightener to clean it up.

Any idea what grit I should use to rough up the surface to get a non-slick surface?

I use 80. Just sand it until you get to bare wood and add teak oil. Don't bother with the other stuff.

I normally don’t use any sandpaper. It seems like any grit makes the surface more slick than I’d like it. I use a hard bristle brush and TSP. I’d only use sandpaper if I were trying to remove a previous owner’s mistake.

I sanded last year and found a couple screw tips sticking out. Anyone ever replace a screw with a shorter one? ♂️
