Help with some issues on new to me '02 196

We decided to add a 196 to the family as the slalom wake on my 210 isn't ideal, my 6/8 year olds are getting into skiing, and I hate waiting for my buddy to come to the lake for the weekend to ride in his 196.

I pulled the trigger on a pretty clean 02 196 last night and now need to start the process of "fixing" it up. I've read a lot about telefflex gauges but thought I would throw everything into one list and see if there is any different feedback.

    - Tach/speedo don't work (this boat does have perfect pass digital pro). Is getting the analog gauges the best/easiest fix?
    - Temp gauge was replaced but was only running between 100-120 when I test drove (water 55 degrees). Is this normal running temp? Can this be calibrated?
    - Air temp gauge works but water temp does not.
    - Depth reading does not work but it allows you to set depth alarm
    - Rust on manifold. Looks like there may have been a leaky gasket at some point.
    - Rear locker!!! The "button" to open the locker doesn't work and you have to pull the release from under the side. Also, the hatch doesn't want to "catch" and keeps popping back up unless you pull the hatch towards the bow as you push it down.
    - Throttle is a little loose.
    - The silver trim around ignition keypad has turned gold and has dark brown blotches. It looks like someone tried to clean it with a chemical and it had a strange reaction.
    - The black plastic engine cover (says ppm 5.8 HO) is scratched all over. It looks like it was scrubbed with a steel wool pad. The guy who I bought it from is the 2nd owner and said it was done by the original owner. Any idea why?

Thanks for any and all help/insight!

I recently sold my 2002 SN 196... owned since demo.

-Tach/speedo don't work (this boat does have perfect pass digital pro). Is getting the analog gauges the best/easiest fix?
If don’t work equals gauges don’t “light up”; then there are threads on this forum about fixing or sending to a guy to get fixed.
I tried fixing the speedo and tach... didn’t work... I tried again and broke the LED’s.
The speedo is an easy and inexpensive fix... a GPS speedo from nautiqueparts.com
The other gauges are an expensive fix... again checkout nautiqueparts.com.

Can you hear a click when you press the button? If yes, then you need to press the latch open with your finger to kind of reset it.
Pull the hatch towards the bow to catch... yep, I had to do the same thing.

      - Throttle is a little loose.
Yep, I had the same thing... it didn’t affect performance so I left it.

      - The silver trim around ignition keypad has turned gold and has dark brown blotches. It looks like someone tried to clean it with a chemical and it had a strange reaction.
Not a cleaning issue, just age. nautiqueparts.com again but when you see the price you might say you like patina.

      - The black plastic engine cover (says ppm 5.8 HO) is scratched all over. It looks like it was scrubbed with a steel wool pad. The guy who I bought it from is the 2nd owner and said it was done by the original owner. Any idea why?

      Hope that helps a little.

The low temp issue may be the thermostat. I fixed my 04 SN with Excalibur 330 by replacing the thermostat, you’ll also need the upper and lower gaskets, all available from Ski Dim.

JI have a 2002 Ski Nautique, and have made some of the same repairs that you had mentioned.
            - I replaced all the gauges with a Faria box set, including a gps speedometer.
            - My key pad surrounds were also stained so I sanded them down to the black rubber.
            - I updated the radio with a CMD6 and Polk speakers/sub.
            - I’m running a 5.7 330, but I haven’t had any issues with leaks.
            - Added some pop up cleats, the boat had none at all.
            - Had some problems with a loose throttle, and I was able to disassemble it then tighten it.
            - I also have some problems with the rear locker doors. I think it’s from the gas shock bending the hinge
and not letting the door line up right. I don’t use it much now since I added a ballast bag back there ( I know it sounds crazy).

ill throw some some pics up, hope this helps I’m kinda new to the form.. Michael.

Beautiful boat. I like the additional sea deck! I sanded down the ignition pad yesterday and primed it. Going to see if new paint will hold. Were you able to take the plate off the main housing? It was a pain in the *** to sand as I couldn’t disassemble mine due to the screws being covered.

how did you tighten up your throttle? I see there is a set screw on it, wondering if that is where I start. I can’t feel any nuts that are lose from the backside.

im ordering new gas shocks for glove box and rear hatches so hopefully that will help fix the closing problem.

Thanks on the boat complement, I felt bad throwing a bunch of pics all over your thread. LOL..
                - Not sure about the main housing plate, Is this the key pad sanding? I might have ever scraped the original color off.

                - I pulled the throttle shifter out ( left cables connected ) to replace it, then found that I could fab up a new neutral locking pin and pull together the two sides.
I might have even slipped a shim in to help with tighten it up ( it was a while back ). It was just flopping around before, and now I can set it at 2000 rpm and it will stay.

                - I removed the rear doors and straightened the hinges and the doors worked great. After replacing the gas shocks noticed doors getting out of alignment again having
to pull them sideways to close. Think my hinges are bent again.

-The SeaDek ( not SeaDek some knockoff ) I bought a sheet, made wood templates, and routed edges. Came out pretty good.

Most things of your questions have been answered above, on the rear button - pull off the trim that covers the back panel, in the center right under the button - the wires can fall off the button. Be careful when re-installing the trim, it can easily knock the wires off the button again.

yeah the housing around the ignition plate was silver and turned a nasty color. Unfortunately I couldn’t separate the buttons from the silver trim so I had to sand with everything g together. It would have been a **** of a lot easier if I could have separated the 2 pieces.

my throttle works just fine holding speeds, it’s the “slop” of the throttle moving laterally that I want to get out. I thought there may just be something to tighten but sounds like that’s not the case.

I see what your saying about the key pad paint removal. I had them out of the helm and used a small flat head screwdriver to scrap the paint away ( took a long time ).

My throttle had a problem with the shifter knob not being on all the way moving side to side, I was able to tighten it up, Also the linkage bracket was lose from the boat side, think I added a washer to firm it up.
