I searched the forum for info but didnt get much. What does one need to know about a 97 Gt40 Pro Boss? Any insight would be appreciated?

There’s quite a bit of info here on that engine and also some over at ccfan. I don’t think there’s a single thread with everything to know about it but I don’t think that’s really needed. It’s 351 block. It uses fuel injection. The injectors are pricey but people have made cheaper ones work with an adaptor. The ECU is no longer available but people have repurposed other Ford ECUs so you can still find them. They’re usually attached to a Walter V drive in v-drive boats. Those aren’t junk but they are the weak link in the drivetrain. The 95 didn’t have a FCC and its fuel pump is hard to find but I don’t think that’s an issue with 96+. So overall it’s the 351 block that’s been around forever with a fuel injection system that has a few pricey and NLA parts but nothing impossible to obtain. And it may be mated to a v drive that is reliable but not as reliable as the engine and transmission.

My honest opinion is that the GT40 is a great engine that is very dependable. Our 95 has about 1500 hrs with only a fuel pump relay going bad. When we look for a newer boat in the future, it's definitely the engine we will be looking for.

I'm familiar with the gt40 but this one has a designation of pro boss. I guess asking for specifics on the pro boss and what that means.

I dont think it's just a nick name, I've already gotten my answers from enough people to know that if taken care of it's a good engine. Thanks for all the help.

GT40 refers to the heads. They’re higher performance heads than the standard 351w heads. GT40 is Ford nomenclature. You can also get GT40 heads in non-marine systems. Engines that come from the factory with GT40 heads are referred to at GT40 engines even though the heads are the only major difference. ProBoss is PCM’s nomenclature for the fuel injection system. All ProBoss are GT40 but not all GT40 engines are ProBoss. As a GT40, the ProBoss engines will use the GT40 distributor, spark plugs, and any other things specific to the GT40 351. There are older PCM engines that use the GT40 heads and a 351w block. GT40 heads can also be put on pretty much any 351w engine for an hp boost. There are several threads about that over on ccfan.
