DTC 1426 (ERWT) 2 Exhaust Water Temperatire higher thant expected stage 1

I just bought a 2018 Super Air G23 and got it on the lake for the first time. Once i filled the ballast and began to surf about one minute and 30 seconds in i got this DTC code. the engie temp had moved to 178 when it shut down but quickly dropped to 150. since the temp didnt seem to be running too high we put some stabl in it and tried again a couple of times. Each time at about 1 minute and 30 seconds the engine would shut down. if we didnt try to surf it ran just fine with temp around 160.
anyone have any thoughts on this?

Have you checked the water intake filter screen in the bilge? This can happen if you have reduced water flow through the engine.

the engine is the 450 horse power. i have not checked the intake filter screen but i suspect that this is the issue
