how to replace ignition key pad: 2000 nautique

Ordered a replacement ignition key pad but unsure how to remove the existing one (would like to remove it before receiving the new one). Can anyone advise on this procedure (like are there screws that hold it in place/does it "snap" into place via a clip, etc?

Unfortunately the new ones only come with a black or wood grain face plate. I would like to not destroy the existing one as it carbon fiber in appearance. So hoping to swap faceplates (if i dont trash mine getting the switch out).

any help is appreciated.

Just remove the dash and you'll see the nuts/bolts that are holding it in place from behind.

On mine, once I remove the dash screws, I'm able to pull the dash forward enough to access the back of the ignition panel without removing the steering wheel. But removing the wheel isn't a big deal either.

BTw...for everyone...do NOT try to use a battery charger on "jump mode" to start the boat...It will (physically) smoke the +400 ignition key pad!

oh, one more question, assume the same pass code/sequence of numbers will work (assuming the codes stored in the PCM and the keypad only sends the code "to" the PCM (??)

ordered the replacement from Nautiqueparts.com. so i will still need to take it to the dealer for them to program the master code? (I purchased the boat from my pal about 5 years ago so i only have the code he had programmed).

have to remove the 6 small screws on the back side of the keypad (use exacto knife to scrape off coating on ONLY the screw heads.

Resurrecting an old thread to hopefully be as successful as those before me. 2000 Sport Nautique, PCM 5.8 HO.

I have the owners manual. It doesn’t appear to describe how to program a “master embedded code” into my recently acquired keypad. I’ll call a CC dealership to get the original master embedded code, sounds like a good idea to use the original as stated above.

I’ll ask the dealership for info. Maybe they will share since I’d rather not pull my boat three hours to see them in person.

I don’t know if you can actually change the master code baked into it. If you got a new keypad, by default there is no “user” code set - you can start the boat right away, so you don’t need the master code to program a new user code. If you program a user code and forget it - then you need the master code to unlock the keypad and reset it.

since my boat is on a hydraulic lift with a key to lock it, I don’t bother with a user PIN code…

That works for me. If I understand correctly I simply plug in the new keypad and START will turn on the boat without a master embedded code? Press START again and the engine fires up?
That doesn’t seem so secure…if any new keypad works immediately. Not an issue for me but a person needing a secure code might be disappointed.

I may get the master code in case I ever need to program a user code.

The new keypad has a master code programmed in when it leaves the manufacturer, but the keypad is in an “unlocked” state when new, so yes you can plug it in, toggle the on/off/bilge switch to “on” and start the boat. You can then add a user PIN code of your choosing to later lock and unlock the keypad. The master code is really long, you don’t want to use that on a daily basis. The purpose of the master code is to unlock it if you forget the pass code you added, and allows the dealer to unlock the keypad if needed for maintenance. The “user” code you will program in is typically 4 digits, and is separate from the master code.
