Maintenance 351 engine after 4 years in storage

    Hi Guys,

Looking to buy a SN with a 351 Pro Boss engine, don't know exactly wich one. Going to have a look at the boat next week.
Also don't know the year, all I know its a NWZ (between '91 and '96), done some reading on the forum but can't find an article on my question.
The boat has been standing unmoved for 4 years in storage now, what maintance do I need to do before taking it out on the water?
What's need to be done on the boat itself and what do I need to replace, clean or service on the engine?

    Thanks!

Check all the fluids , New battery. Has it been winterized? I would think old gas would be your biggest problem. Is it fuel injected or carbureted ?

If it’s been sitting for 4 years I’d take a breaker bar or really big ratchet and turn the crank by hand for about two revolutions to make sure it cranks smoothly before trying to fire it up.

Don't know yet if its has a carb or TBI. Sure it hasn't got MPI. Also don't know if it has Protec ignition.
I would definitely replace engine oil, trans oil, sparkplugs, battery, impeller and flush the engine. It runs on propane so no old gas issues, think the gastank is out.
Was wondering if there are extra items that needs care like for exemple getting the exhaust manifold off, steering linkage, shaft seal,...
Things to do beside the normal service an engine requires.

Having it on propane makes this MUCH easier. You have nothing to worry about on the fuel side.

Besides your list, test the steering and see if it's stiff. You're definitely in the age range for needing a new cable if it hasn't already been replaced. Outside of that, check all of the usual things. Prop, rudder, strut, etc.
