1990 PCM Trans Oil Question..cant find sae 20

i have found sae 20 in the past...lately i cant find it anywhere.

i dont think 5/20 will hurt anything.

was thinking of using mobil 0/20 but am concerned about using synthetis in a trans that has 1400 hours on it.

i am original owner....so i know its history very well.

    any opinions would be appreciated.

    and nice forum!

Penzoil makes 20W20 (straight 20). You should be able to find it.

contrary to popular beleif, i personally do not think switching to synthetic at any point in the life of a tranny/engine will hurt any thing. the only problem that may occur would be a leak at a seal that had been clogged with dirt before. typically, a synthetic oil will only emphasize an existing problem. if thats the case then the problem probably needs attention anyway

Not sure why you cant find it, but its out there. I bought Valvoline 20w most recently.

no one has it locally. last time i changed my trans fluid ws probably in 2000. i havent used th eboat much since then. the issue is most of the local auto parts stores have closed with the opening of pep boys and auto zone everywhere...

          what a shame imho.

That is a shame. Maybe buy a case online that will last you a few years? Tranny fluid should really be changed every fall, btw.

If you have a Pep Boys in your neck of the woods I would try there.
Even here in Los Angeles they were the most reliable source. If not, could you possibly order the stuff online...just a thought.

Why not switch over to transmission fluid? As long as you flush the tranny 3 times with new fluid, the Dextron shouldn't hurt anything.

that's not true you can do a great deal of damage to your engine by switching to syn and in some case destroy the motor in the process. If the motor was orginally designed and spec'd for syn your fine but if you take a brand new engine or rebuild break it in with conventional oil for the break in period then switch to syn start saving your money for the new motor your going to need in a very short period of time.

here's what joe was told after loosing oil pressure and some lifters on a fresh rebuild earlier this year

"Edelbrock is recommending a 10w-30 conventional oil and GM EOS engine oil supplement for at least a few oil changes before switching to synthetic. Would have been nice to know about the EOS before the intial break in but live and learn I guess I will hold off on the synthetic for a year or so and check and see how its going at that point"

I've been searching everywhere for the 20w-20 for my transmission. Anyone ever have any luck on where to find it? Any online stores sell it by the case? I've tried quite a few local shops, but no one has it- and no one can order it.

                        Trasns Oil

Valvoline makes SAE 2OW motor oil.
                        Name SAE 20W Motor Oil
                        Size Quart
                        Part VV153
                        UPC 0-74130-00153-4
Anyone that sells Valvoline oil should be able to order you a case. I also saw it for sale through Shopping.com. Do a search for "valvoline sae
20w motor oil" and you might find other suppliers. I've been using it in my 90 since it was new with no problems. I bought a case of it years ago in order to avoid just what you're going through now.

I think that JAG's correct that anyplace that sells Valvoline and knows their *** from their elbow should be able to order it. Try NAPA.

Another option is to switch over to ATF. I did so this spring after speaking with a tranny expert and SkiDIM. Just change the fluid a few times to be sure you get all the 20w out.

I put in Valvoline Dexron/Mercon conventional ATF. DO NOT use synthetic in the tranny. Synthetic ATF is too slippery for our wet clutch transmissions (per the aforementioned tranny expert, SkiDIM and PCM).

I was wondering about synthentics in a PCM tranny.

                            Thanks
