Serpentine Belt / Idler Pullet

Hi all,
2018 G21 H6 6.2L popped serpentine belt today and idler pulley looks trashed.
I’m looking at belt R066037 and I found the idler pulley part.
Do I need a tensioner tool to get this done?
Any other tips? Can’t miss 7/4 weekend on this!

Most serpentine belts can be replaced by taking a socket and ratchet and releasing the tension on the tensioner pulley to install the belt. Should be able to replace the tensioner pulley without a special tool, but I am not familiar with that engine.

you just need a 1/2" breaker bar to rotate the tensioner slightly to remove the belt

Got new idler installed Guy at auto parts store snipped old belt (108”) and got me a replacement. But incant get the tensioner back in place...even with some leverage and cranking on it. Feels like off by an inch. What am I missing?

Is the tensioner not moving back and forth freely? I had this problem on my engine. It was rubbing on the ECM bracket.

Charles, the tensioner moves freely but like a key, not a spring - loosen the bolt and pull tensioner aft and it slots out and freely moves. I’m trying to rotate it back up and slot in but too much tension.

Could I be turning wrong bolt on tensioner? I have it dropped by loosening the lower bolt that would be used to take it completely off. This allows me to pull it aft and drop it down. Should I be turning the bolt directly on the pulley?

Just checked. There is only one 15mm bolt on tensioner so I can’t be screwing that up.

when i removed the belt to change my impeller. i did not remove any bolts on tensioner. all i did was stick the "square" of the 1/2" breaker bar into the "square" on the pulley and rotate it counter clockwise just enough to take the tension off the belt. then slide the belt off. you shouldn't have to remove any bolts

make sure the belt is routed the correct way

**** I was doing it wrong! No wrench needed, just what kylant said with breaker bar in square on pulley. Back on water. Kylant saves the 4th! Thanks for help.

Had the exact same issue at 9pm last Friday night on an H5. Idler pulley (under the alternator) bearing seized up destroying the pulley and the belt. Come to find out there has been a service bulletin out since 2018 concerning this issue. Really frustrating we lost the holiday weekend for a known problem.

Wish I would have seen this post last Saturday as I did not know the belt size so waited until Monday to get a new belt from the dealer.

Thanks to a previous post by scottb7 I was able to get a replacement idler pulley (Gates part # 38015 -> PCM Part Number R605040) but the belt thrashed another idler pulley (PCM part #R065063) and I cannot find a replacement for that. Thankfully we were able to smooth out the damage on that pulley and reuse it while we wait for the dealer to fix the entire issue under warranty.

Most frustrating part is we have to pull boat out and take to the dealer because of the service bulletin, we have been told that they cannot send we the warranty parts to fix it. On top of that service is backed up so who knows when they will get it in.

This is a well-known issue. Should be covered under warranty.

That is a different issue that was under a recall, had to deal with that one as well leaving us stranded on the water the day before we received the recall letter. The idelr pulley service bulletin is SUP2018-01.

Anyone know a suitable replacement for the R065063 smooth pulley with lip edge. Mine locked up and was destroyed and took the belt with it. I ordered a replacement but just realized they sent me the grooved one that goes next to it.

Gates 38015 worked
