Good luck. It’s easy once you get a routine together. I just did mine today. I do feel the need to tell on myself after talking up Fram earlier and the general uselessness of reading too much into filtration analysis. I spent the extra $1 on a Wix filter over a Motorcraft. I was at O’Reilly because Delo 400 was on sale and it’s the oil I use for my EX343. Wix isn’t an option at Walmart where I usually get oil. I guess the better filtration is worth a dollar to me. I still don’t trust that chart. Wix and Napa Gold are the same filter. They should test identically.
I understand the logic being used on using budget or marginal quality oil and filters but it's just not for me. Being the son of a father that turned a wrench on quarter midgets and circle track cars I just wasn't raised to think like that (and yeah I was also taught to clean and put away my tools after using them which I still do as well). Honestly, I like my stuff too much and tend to keep things probably a little longer than most not the spend the extra $5 on better quality products. Same goes for the impeller, gas filters and trans fluid, etc.. I'd rather do all the maintenance according to the book using high quality products knowing I did it right than take a chance with unknown or questionable quality products or by stretching the maintenance schedule.
But again that's just me. What you do with your stuff is completely up to you. All that matters is that you're happy with it.
What shocks me is when people are willing to spend HUGE money on a boat and then go cheap on oil, filters, fluids, parts, etc. Then there is the crowd that ignores the recommended service intervals and instead goes with a run-to-failure mindset. I don't get it -- but it's your boat and your money...
It’s a matter of perspective. For me, it’s not a matter of going cheap. It’s a matter of not spending more for something that meets the same spec. We’re pumping oil through resin-soaked paper. It’s not rocket science. Even Fram can manage to make something that will do that for 50 hours. Mobil 1 is absolutely a better filter but it’s designed for a longer duty cycle than I’ll ever give it.
just got it done. used the mityvac fluid extractor, not a drop spilled
the filter was another story. luckily i planned ahead and had drop cloths and plastic bags around the filter. 2 drops only.
question: I extracted nearly 7.5 liters from the pan. I know the pcm manual says to start at 6 quarts (for H6). So what are you guys finding is the correct amount of oil to refill?
