    Checking the dip stick

I am having a really hard time reading my dip stick this year. I have an sv211 with the 330 Excalibur. Boat is sitting level on the trailer. If the boat sits over night and I pull the dipstick out it reads full. When I wipe it off put it right back in and pull it out now it only reads half full or less. The tube seems tight and I don’t seem to have any evidence of leaks. The boat only has 228 hours on it. Any gurus out there that can explain why I get a lower level the second time and which one is accurate?

When your engine runs oil sloshes around. When it’s not running the oil settles. Your dipstick can have residual oil on it if not wiped
first. The second will be more accurate. This is true of all vehicles, not just boats. Checking in the water after wiping will be more accurate still. (That last one is just for boats.)

Yeah but it isn’t running. It’s just sitting. After I check it twice it will read full again after a few hours. The second time it will read lower.

Engines are big and oil seeps slowly. There’s no telling where exactly the oil is coming from. But it’s not an issue as long as you’re not spotting leaks. Assuming you are putting the dipstick back in all the way on your second check it will always be the more accurate of the two.
