2004SAN TE with velvet drive that will not go into gear

I've read so many helpful how to's on here in the past and I'm hoping someone has the knowledge to relieve my stress here.....

So....Suddenly lost forward and reverse last Tuesday night under mild acceleration after running about 10-15 minutes at about 3000 rpm....slowed for a no wake zone and then tried to accelerate. Started out of the hole fine- nothing crazy, not hammered down by any means.... then lost all power to the prop. Nothing sense.

The lake was wavy and i thought my v drive fluid was maybe low so added, and trans fluid looked dark but not burning smelling.....got towed home to the dock and I've been researching and talking some to skidim folks as well. They are such great helps. No dealer around here could touch the boat for weeks....

Vince there is saying it sounds like dampener plate. which i'm totally willing to order.

But before I tackle this, I'm searching for tips to narrow down the possible issue and be more certain of the problem. Most folks seem to think if it was the vdrive it would whine and then seize. is this true?

Also, when I shift the lever into forward and reverse there is a detectable slight drop in rpm like its going into gear, and then the rpms recover, just like normal......just no prop turning....

I ordered her new, and this boat has been rock solid for 16 year now and I wanna fix her up ASAP, but be smart about it. Any thoughts or help appreciated folks!!!!

Could this issue be at the shift lever? or at neutral button itself?
