Does anyone have any suggestions on reverse not engaging on a ski nautique with a PCM model 40 transmission? I have checked and added fluid (did not seem low or murky) Forward works fine, reverse does not engage at all. The linkage is functioning. When shifting, the lever rotates and the engine revs correctly, just no movement at the propeller. I am hoping for the best, but fearing the worst. Happened all of a sudden after working flawlessly during a two hour ride.

I’m gonna take a look at the neutral safety switch before I get into it too far. Fingers crossed.

After some research on this site and others, it looks like I will need to remove the transmission and either rebuild or replace. The following links have been helpful in preparation for this job.

There is a shortage on transmissions and the recommended replacement [PCM 80] is in short supply. My goal right now, is to remove the transmission and see if I can identify the problem, likely the clutches. If everything else looks good, I'll replace the clutches and see what happens. So far, I have prepped the area. Next step will be removing the exhaust.
If anyone has suggestions, I would certainly be appreciative. I have never gotten this involved in any engine project and this is my first boat.

Use a hair dryer or heat gun to warm your hoses for removal, it helps a lot. Also some soapy water may help if you can get it between the hose and muffler. Be gentle around the fiberglass so you dont punch holes or crack it.1998 SN GT40

Well, never wanted to be posting a pic like this one, but we got the transmission out of the boat. I have it mostly broken down and have identified two possibilities for a loss in pressure in reverse. The clutches and everything internally looks perfect. Nothing obvious.
First, when I got to the reverse piston, I noticed the o-ring was out of position on one side and preventing the piston from returning to the downward position. I am not positive that I didn't cause this problem on the bench when performing a function check. But this would explain the sudden loss in reverse function from an otherwise functioning tranny.
Second, when I removed the control arm, I found the assembly to be extremely rust and debris filled. This could have lead to a blockage further down.
Plan for now is to clean everything up, replace the seals and gaskets, and see what happens. Updates to follow. Great advise on the soap and heat gun from mpost above.

Update: after replacing all seals, reassembling the transmission, and reconnecting to the engine, I started the engine. Forward functioned flawlessly. Reverse worked initially. After putting into neutral and trying reverse again, it failed. Feels like no pressure again. At this point I’m stuck. The clutches looked fine and all seals are new. The passages were blown out and free of obstruction.
I am thinking of just going ahead and buying a new transmission. Apparently the PCM 80 is the recommended replacement for a PCM 40. Presently, SKIDIM does not have any for sale. Any suggestions?

Update:
PCM is still dealing with some setbacks with COVID and I was unable to locate a PCM 80. Fortunately, when I called Vince at https://www.skidim.com/ to get on a waiting list for the 80, he was able to find an "off the block" PCM 40, that had never seen transmission fluid. Gotta say, he was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. The transmission arrived via UPS in two days and I put it back on. Oil cooler, mounts, shaft coupling, all matched up perfectly. Between hurricanes, tropical storms, COVID and everything else, I was able to function test today and she worked flawlessly. The water is a little high on the Tchefuncte River and I did not want to make any of the homeowners upset with the wake, but there were only a few spots where I could open it up. No issues at all. Thanks for the comments, posts and info. This site has been a great resource.
