    216V EX343 made a "bang" now won't restart...

Have a '09 216V with Ex343 engine. We were surfing today and midrun I heard a bang / pop and the engine chugged, I went off throttle immediately and turned it off. Boat wouldn't restart - would try to turn over - normal starter sounds - but nothing like it would even try to turn over. Fuel pump or something related?
We were running a decent amount of ballast, but nothing out of the ordinary. Any thoughts on where to look? (Boat has half a tank of new fuel, lanyard is in place and boat won't even turn over when I pull it, everything else works, no smoke, no leaks, no fuel smell, no overheating, belt looks good, throttle works, etc). I know, can be 101 different things, but thanks for any insight!

What do you mean when you say the engine chugged?

Was it more like a backfire bang or a mechanical letgo bang?

I'd start with a check of the basics. Do you have fuel pressure? Spark?

My hopeful thinking theory - something that controls the timing let go (does this engine have a distributor? If so pull the cap and check it and the rotor closely) and when it let go, the timing change caused a backfire then slipped more leading to a no start condition.....

    Fingers crossed. Good luck.

      Thanks for the insight!
I heard the bang / pop and felt a bit of a chug / hesitation from the engine - but I was very quick in stopping the boat. Felt more like a mechanical letdown bang.
I'll have to check the engine more closely when it cools down.
Yeah, fingers crossed... thus far the boat has been amazing - hopefully something simple.

Thanks, forgot to post here - even though distributor cap and rotor LOOKED clean etc - that was the problem - replaced and all good. Fires up much quicker now. USed to start up at the end of the starter sequence - maybe it's a sign it's going for future note...
