1979 Ski Tique Water Pump Problems...

I have owned my 1979 Ski Tique since 1983. I have done heavy maintenance on the engine and many other parts. So when I was getting the boat ready for this years season, I didn't think anything about taking the Jabsco 17410 Raw Water pump apart to check the impeller. The impeller looked a little worn, so I put in a new OEM impeller and re-assembled the pump.

However, now the pump doesn't work. It seems to be running... Backwards. I have re-assembled, checked everything I can think of, and it simply doesn't pull any water from my bucket I use to supply the engine with cooling when it is out of the water. IN fact, I can see it blowing the water back out the inlet hose......

I am at a loss to explain what could be happening, so any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have replaced the gaskets, and impeller. checked the body for cracks, and lubed the impeller.

Here are some photos that might help:

I believe the pump is installed “upside down” - ie re-install after turning the pump 180 degrees so that the hose fitting that is now down is up. I have done the same thing. You won’t do it twice!

I was thinking the same thing..... However, the water intake hose on the bottom is a 1 1/2" hose and the output hose at the top is 1". Hmm... But if the mounting plate was rotated 180 degrees, then the 1 1/2" hose would be up. Then the pump could be flipped 180 degrees putting the larger hose at the bottom.... If it wasn't almost midnight, I would go give this a try! I think you are right! I will let you know tomorrow!
      Thanks (I hope!)

        THANKS SO MUCH!
Sure enough I rotated the pump housing 180 degrees in the bracket, which forced me to flip the pump body 180 degrees so the outlet port was still on the top of the engine. Put it together and it worked perfectly.
My downfall was thinking that the pump was keyed so that it could not be installed backwards. Although the pump body is eyed using two posts, it has the same key holes on both sides of the pump body.
So for anyone else who might find themselves in this position - here is a picture of the proper orientation of a Jabsco Jabsco 17410 Raw Water on the Ford 302 for a 1979 Ski Tique!

BTW anyone know the specifications for the paint they used on the "Ski Tique" logo?

One Final Note.... When you sense something is wrong, it probably is...

When I went to re-attach the outlet hose to the pump the hose would not reach the pump outlet as I thought it should... This bothered me, but not enough to stop and save myself two days of headaches!
